Breeze of Autumn

The last leaf twirls
round and round
in a miniature hurricane

Settled upon the nettle
down and down
upon the cold ground

A crack in a window
I can smell
the faintest hint of apple

Mother Bird's peppered pie
perhaps it is
such a delicious delight

Uplifted in the air
up and away
into the autumn sky

Following the hungry trail
of Mama's pie

The last lead twirls
round and round.

"A summer breeze pales in comparison to the winds of autumn. Take a deep breath and enjoy the harvest."

  2. The smell of apple pie is one that can allure a person even when smelled through cracks.

    1. There are some kinds of candle wax that smells like apple pie, and that is what kind of inspired me to write this. I've always wondered how people know what autumn smells like though...

  4. I like this. It draws so many pictures in my mind.

Crows are thieves of crops and noisy birds. The buzzards clean house for all of us. This is a turkey buzzard but we have a new kind, the New World Vulture, who is smaller and more aggressive. They do not wait for death.

    Thanks for visiting.

  5. i love how round and round can be interpreted in so many different ways..how wonderful it would deb if it were always in the twist of warm bread or lovingly made pastries!

    1. It would be wonderful indeed. That's probably why everyone eats their warm pie with a scoop of cold ice cream. Makes a delicious balance.

    1. Shorter phrases in poetry often hurries the reader along, but I think that it can also help focus an image more. In this case the swelling smell of autumn.
